"I hate writing content!"

"Writing content every single day, not getting results, is fucking tiring!" I heard a coach exclaim last week. She detested the process and was getting involved in the content hamster wheel just because "that's the only way to go forward, isn’t it?". She had listened to all the “marketers” and “bros” on Twitter and was now facing nothing but friction with her business. As soon as she finished her rant, I asked..."Are you sure there's no other way?"That one conversation resulted in an insane number of ways she could build her successful, sustainable business without content. It was eye-opening.

She isn’t the only one facing this problem. Not all of us are content writers and copywriters. And we needn’t be too! If you feel your job is just to coach and don’t want to learn writing, that must be okay!

Your business your way, right???

Today I’ll share 4 tips on how to build a thriving coaching/consulting business without entirely depending on content marketing, funnels, and all that bullshit.

My one-line business plan for 15 years has been, “Meet fun and interesting people.” - Rich Litvin, author of The Prosperous Coach

The plan here is to have one fantastic conversation every single day (or at least a couple of times a week) because no high-ticket client is formed without a powerful conversation.

Have a deep intense conversation with people to be remembered. Especially in a world filled with people mindlessly scrolling their screens, nothing is more important than connection. And the need to be seen or heard.

Be there for people you want to create an impact in. You’ll automatically be ahead of 90% of the folks.

Now, all we need to do is figure out how to do it. Are you ready?

1. Where do my people come together and thrive?

People with similar problems or lifestyles always congregate in one place. Remember that. What’s it for you? What’s it for the people you want to serve?

Think deeply. And don’t stop yourself from going above and beyond!

It can be online or offline communities. Facebook or Whatsapp groups. Conferences that happen in your city. Meetups. Libraries. Cohort-based courses (because they rely on communities too). Anything.

In this scenario, you can either join a community or create your own with your contacts.

Because not a single business can thrive without a community.

Get out of your home! And keep your eyes open!

“I met this woman on the train, and we simply started talking. And instantly hit off! She was curious about what I did, and when I explained that I was a life coach and help people through their confidence, I literally saw her eyes light up!

She was apparently looking for someone to work with because she was facing intense friction in her corporate job. We then exchanged numbers and are now working together! I’m mind blown Shruthi!!” - One of my close friends who’s also a coach

Serendipity is a weird thing. It happens in circumstances least expected and blows your mind.

But you need to put in the effort and keep your eyes open.

Opportunities can come in any form.

Your children’s friend’s parents.Bumping into an old friend at a supermarket.Meeting a long-distance relative at a wedding.A fellow spiritual person in a Temple/Mosque/Church

Anything!

By this, I really don’t mean keep selling your offer to every homosapien you meet! No way! Nor consider every interaction as a coaching practice or a discovery call!

But…when “What do you do?” is the most common question, don’t be afraid to share. That’s all I’m asking.

Collaborate with other coaches (and people)

Referrals will be one of the most significant ways to gain clients in the months to come because our trust in our friends helps exponentially in setting the context.

I found my therapist through 2 of my friends. Not any website or social media. When I discovered she was mind-blowing, I again referred her to 2 more people! With just our group alone, she’s gained 6 clients in the last 3 months! And that’s insane!

You can also create affiliates and send them X% of the income whenever someone refers you to a client. While people would automatically refer you without even thinking if you’re that gooood, this again becomes a cherry on the cake—a win-win situation.

Tap into your already existing network

This is the one thing most people forget to do…because they feel they’re starting afresh! You never are! You always come with a wealth of knowledge and people…irrespective of your background!

If you’re starting your coaching business, the best place to start is by giving free coaching sessions to people you already know.

A simple message like this would do:

Hey [Name]!

How are you doing??

I need some help!

I’m currently learning to be a business (replace this with your term) coach. So for the first few weeks, I’m offering free sessions to anyone who needs help with A, B, and C problems.

Do you know anyone like this?

I’d be extremely grateful for your help!

With love,

Shruthi

This’ll work brilliantly initially, especially when you’re starting. And word of mouth will eventually lead to more referrals in a few months.

Every point here was about a conversation, you see?

Human connection

You can either use these ideas or sometimes even directly connect with an interesting person online! Just to talk…not sell!

Because over time, our relationships and network form this unimaginable vast wide web that we can’t even control. And that’s beautiful! People suddenly start to know each other. Unknowingly you have developed a community around you. Your friends are constantly trying to bring new people into the tribe, connecting you and creating another thread on the web.

Irrespective of what marketers say…the fundamentals of a coaching business is a deep, enriching, insightful conversation.

Nothing happens without it.

It’ll probably take time, but it’s worth it

Now, you, of course, can use these techniques to create clients even if you’re using content to gain “leads”.

See what works for you. Mix and match! Do what feels comfortable, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Run your business your way!

Until next time,Shruthi
